Fertility 101: Treatment
Fertility Medications: Tamoxifen
How it works:
Tamoxifen is an antiestrogen similar in structure to Clomid. You may recognize it as a medication commonly used to treat breast cancer. It is being used off label to induce or augment your ovulation.
Why we use it: As an alternative to clomid it is often less expensive and may cause less thinning of the endometrial lining. Studies suggest that it has the same efficacy as clomid in inducing ovulation and resultant pregnancy.
Directions on use:
Begin on cycle day 3 and take one to three tablets per day for five days. Please use ovulation predictor kits to monitor ovulation. We suggest that you have blood work for progesterone on day 20 or 21 of your cycle. An ultrasound may be recommended in some women during their Tamoxifen cycle.
