Conceptions Honored for Excellent Customer Experience
Carolina Conceptions was honored with
the First Citizens Bank Exceptional Customer Experience Award by the
Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce in a ceremony held Tuesday, May 4,
2010. Over 500 community members gathered at the Raleigh Convention
Center for the 26th anniversary celebration of the Pinnacle
Business Awards to honor some of Raleigh's most talented and innovative
entrepreneurs and small businesses. Dr. Grace Couchman, Dr. Bill Meyer,
Dr. John Park and many of Carolina Conceptions' staff members were in
attendance to accept the award. "This honor is especially
meaningful to our team given the fact that extraordinary customer
service is at the heart of our practice's mission statement," says
Sheridan Robinson, practice manager at Carolina Conceptions.
The First Citizens Bank Exceptional Customer Experience
Award highlights the efforts of small to medium-sized businesses that
not only provide great customer service but who make efforts above and
beyond to establish an exceptional customer experience at every point
of contact, throughout the organization. "After years of working
with Carolina Conceptions, I have witnessed firsthand their consistent
dedication to exceptional customer service. Between their warm and
friendly staff and rave reviews from patients, Carolina Conceptions was
a deserving choice for this year's First Citizens Bank Exceptional
Customer Service Award," says John Terry, vice president of
Triangle Commercial Banking at First Citizens Bank in Raleigh.
The Pinnacle Business Awards, hosted
by the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, annually recognizes some of
the Triangle's most successful business executives from both emerging
companies and companies that have exhibited a substantial history as an
established business. This is the first Pinnacle award for Carolina
Conceptions who opened in 2006.

Preimplantation Genetic
Diagnosis
After a devastating loss of their
five month old son to a genetically linked disease, a North Carolina
couple finds hope for a healthy baby through an innovative technology
called Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). Using embryo biopsy,
PGD allows geneticists to screen for disorders such as Down syndrome,
cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease and spinal muscular atrophy in the
earliest stages of life.
Joanne and Blaine Reese of Macon,
North Carolina were overjoyed when they gave birth to their first child
- a son named Joseph. However, at only six weeks of age doctors
discovered that Joseph was born with spinal muscular atrophy, a condition
inherited from his parents. The Reese couple learned they are both
carriers of the fatal disease and together share a 25% chance of having
an affected child, a 50% chance of conceiving a carrier, and a 25%
chance of delivering a perfectly healthy baby. Their doctor presented
an idea that would significantly increase the odds for a non-affected
child and they soon after sought the expertise of local infertility
specialist Dr. Grace Couchman of Carolina Conceptions in Raleigh.
"I chose Dr. Couchman for her
reputation and experience, but after our first visit when we all had
tears in our eyes, I realized that she was also one of the most caring
doctors I had every met. I cannot thank her and the team at Carolina
Conceptions enough for giving us hope for a healthy family," says
Joanne who now has two children; Haley is two and a half years old and
Ross was born on November 23, 2009.
Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis
(PGD) is a technique used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization
(IVF). The embryos created through IVF are biopsied to differentiate
which are chromosomally normal. Only the unaffected embryos are used
for transfer/conception. "It is always rewarding to help couples
conceive, but to use PGD to ensure they have a healthy baby -
one who may otherwise have suffered from a life-threatening genetic
disorder - is particularly gratifying," says Dr. Couchman, who is
a board certified infertility specialist that has been helping couples
conceive for almost 20 years.

Pay It Forward Fertility Forum
This past Saturday, May 8, Carolina Conceptions
participated in the Pay It Forward Fertility Foundation's first annual
educational forum held at the Marriott Crabtree Valley. More than 130
gathered to hear physicians from local fertility clinics speak on
topics such as IVF, male factor infertility, PCOS, surgery, fertility
preservation, PGD, recurrent miscarriage, adoption, and affording
treatments. Exhibitors ranging from pharmacy and pharmaceutical
companies to fertility clinics, adoption agencies, acupuncture centers,
and psychologists gave attendees a comprehensive opportunity to collect
as much information as possible on their journey towards building a
family.
Dr. Alice Domar of the Domar Center for Mind/Body Health
in Boston was the event's keynote speaker. She gave attendees a
colorful understanding of the psychological and emotional challenges
they face on a daily basis and how to combat some of those stressors.
Dr. Grace Couchman and Dr. John Park along with Practice Manager
Sheridan Robinson contributed informative talks to attendees on IVF,
PGD and affording treatments while Dr. Bill Meyer and some of the
Carolina Conceptions staff supplied participants with one-on-one time
to ask questions and gather information at their exhibition booth. Carolina
Conceptions is proud to have been a part of the first Pay It Forward
Fertility Forum and looks forward to helping educate the community at
this annual event for many years to come. For more information, please
